European and UK Health and Safety (H&S) legislation
now takes a risk-driven rather than rule-driven approach to workplace safety. Blind safety
'rules' are mostly, a thing of the past. The requirement now is for employers to adopt a
global risk management approach . This relies on a clear understanding of the control
measures required to deal with risks arising from work activities. Effective
prioritisation is the name of the game but successful, cost effective risk assessment and
risk management isn't special to health and safety - it relies on an understanding and
application of sound management principles to the subject. You do risk management
anyway - you just don't, perhaps, do it as effectively as you should. Being from an
ergonomics background, we have a distinct advantage over most safety consultancies - for
us, the answer has always been 'it depends'. We know how to analyse risks and
develop effective risk management strategies because those have always been the skills
we've had to apply to ergonomics problems! Safety and ergonomics, in that respect, go hand
in glove. Human Applications in Health &
Safety - safety for the non-safety professional
As consultants and also as trainers offering a wide
range of IOSH-accredited safety competency courses, we have a particular interest and
expertise with those who are not safety practitioners themselves, but who must
manage safety on a day to day basis. We work with local safety practitioners to
widen the skills-base of effective safety management at both central and local levels. We
have thus been extensively involved with the development and practical application of
risk-driven health and safety strategies across a wide range of organisations and
industries. Our work ranges from safety audits to validating risk assessments; policy
development to defining and implementing risk management/loss control strategies;
awareness raising; assessor competency and user training; and of course, to
troubleshooting where complex problems exist.
Developing and implementing safety policies and
risk management strategies
We have helped
and continue to work with a large number of organisations in a wide variety
of sectors in the development of workable health
and safety policies and the implementation of effective Risk Management Programmes.
We have particular experience either where existing strategies demonstrably
aren't working or
where there may be resistance from senior management to be overcome in implementing
new procedures. Because we have experience of what does and doesn't work
in a wide variety of
application areas, we know what is and isn't likely to succeed. Why recreate
the wheel? We
also act as retained safety advisers for a wide variety of organisations
in locations throughout the UK.
Safety auditing and risk monitoring
You need to know where you are with safety practice
before you can decide where you want to go! So a compliance audit, or a specific detailed
technical audit can be one of the most effective ways of deciding what you need to do to
improve. Audits can be as formal or as informal as is appropriate. Similarly, monitoring
real-world safety performance to agreed benchmarks or performance standards gives
employers the opportunity to make the ongoing 'tweaks'.
Worried about issues regarding compliance?
We specialise in compliance with the 'Six Pack' and
other risk-driven health and safety legislation - the DSE Regulations and RSI avoidance;
legal liability and personal injury litigation; workplace and work equipment safety and
usability, manual handling; standards compliance and best practice; health and safety for
personnel managers; health and safety for non-health and safety staff; management
training/action plans and ergonomics in engineering design.
